A very refreshing and pleasant alternative to baked apple is as follows: Choose a large cooking apple, and slice it across into two equal halves. With a sharp knife, carefully remove most of the core from both pieces, but do not perforate.....fill each depression with sugar and a knob of butter, then place the apple halves under the grill and leave for about 15 minutes, when the fruit should have swelled up and the top will have caramelised.
