Potatoes - Desiree

Yield 1.5 lbs per 2 gallon pot; 2.5 lbs per 3 gallon pot. Red skin and pale yellow flesh. Good all-round medium floury potato which gives acceptable results no matter how cooked. Prone to scab on sandy soil. Years ago (1970s) we grew this on a mixed farm in the East Midlands; it was reputedly fairly blight-proof. These days it's rated at 5.

It flowers freely and often sets seed. The flowers are pretty; pale purple with yellow centre. Medium height haulms, fairly thick. There's not much trouble with blight in most years.

In the ground, the tubers sometimes grow very large. The plants grow well in containers. Its flavour is better than that of some of its successors (romano, for example).
