English Apples - Granny Smith

I remember the first time I encountered this apple - "Granny Smith", promised to me as a treat by my grandmother when I was about 5 years old. Never was I more disappointed. Poor flavour, too sour, cloying taste, hard but not crisp......

My opinion has not changed, but the apple is slightly less objectionable when cooked.

Deacon's catalogue gives the following details: a Spring eating apple; keeps all winter until about April, and does well in hot summers.

It's a good job we don't all like the same things....
