English Apples - May Queen

Dates from 1888, Worcester. Attractive dessert apple which crops heavily and shows no tendency to go biennial. Similar texture to Ribston, and in a good year, the equal of Ribston in flavour. Ready mid to end of Oct; stores pretty well; still good in Jan.

The books say that it stores longer but I've never had them last into Feb. The tree has strong compact growth.

In bad years the taste can be rather dry and harsh.

UPDATE, 2011.... this year the apples have stored unusually well - it's now mid-Feb and they are still in excellent condition.
