English Apples - Ribston's Pippin

For a brief period in each season (fresh off the tree), this is the best-flavoured English apple. However the apple doesn't keep its fine flavour or texture on storage. My own tree is prone to woolly aphis (and therefore canker); some years the fruit get bitter pit on storage.

The tree is triploid. Ribston will set a crop on its own but more fruit will be obtained if pollinated by other varieties. The apples are russeted and firm, with a Cox-type flavour.

Ribston is the parent of Cox. It originates from Ribston Hall in Yorkshire; 1688.
